Launch on Product Hunt
Prepare the listing and assets in advance, launch at 12:01 a.m. Pacific time, and tell your own list and communities on the day.
What's required2–4 weeks of preparation and community activity, then a full launch day of replying.
- Accounts
- A Product Hunt account with a complete maker profile, used actively for a few weeks before launch.
- Assets
- A 240x240 thumbnail, 3–6 gallery images or a short video, a tagline under 60 characters, a description and a drafted maker comment.
- Time
- 2–4 weeks of preparation and community activity, then a full launch day of replying.
- Cost
- Free.
- Prerequisites
- A live product people can sign up for, and a list of 50–200 people who agreed to check it out on launch day.
What to do
- Become an active Product Hunt member 3–4 weeks before launch. Fill out your profile with a real photo, your name and a headline like “Building [product]”. Visit daily, try a few launches, and leave real comments with a specific observation or question. Follow makers in your category. Accounts that only appear on launch day get little attention, and the people you talked to are more likely to look at your launch.
- Create your product page early and collect followers. If Product Hunt offers an upcoming or coming soon page for your product, set it up and share the link with your waitlist, friends and communities. Each follower gets notified when you launch. Put the link in your email signature and social bios.
- Build a supporters list of 50–200 people. Go through your waitlist, beta users, past colleagues and people from build in public. Message each one personally and ask: “I’m launching on Product Hunt on [date]. Could I send you the link that morning? I’d love your honest feedback.” Record who said yes in a spreadsheet with their preferred contact channel.
- Prepare the gallery and copy a week ahead. You need a clear thumbnail (240x240, animated GIF allowed), 3–6 gallery images (1270x760 works well) and ideally a short demo video. The first image should show the product and state the benefit in a few words. Keep the tagline under 60 characters and literal: “Turn meeting notes into Jira tickets” beats “The future of productivity”.
- Pick a weekday and launch at 12:01 a.m. Pacific time. The daily leaderboard resets at midnight Pacific, so launching right after gives you the full 24 hours. Tuesday to Thursday is the most competitive; some small makers prefer a weekend for less competition and fewer visitors.
- Post your maker comment immediately after launch. Tell the story behind the product, who it is for, what is different and what feedback you want. Offer something to the community if it fits, such as an extended trial. Use the template below.
- Ask for feedback, not upvotes. Product Hunt discourages asking for upvotes, and bursts of votes from new accounts can be discounted. Send your supporters a personal message with the link: “We’re live on Product Hunt. I’d really appreciate your feedback in the comments.” Spread messages through the day, not all at 12:01.
- Reply to every comment all day. Answer within minutes if you can. Specific, warm replies keep the discussion going, and an active comment thread matters more to visitors than the vote count.
- Follow up the next day. Thank supporters, post a short recap on your channels, and email everyone who signed up. The listing keeps sending some traffic from search and collections.

Hi Product Hunt! I’m [name], maker of [product].
I built it because [specific problem, one or two sentences, ideally personal].
[Product] helps [who] [do what] by [how]. Unlike [usual alternative], it [one real difference].
What you can try today: [2–3 bullet points of features].
It’s early, and [one honest limitation]. I’d love to hear [specific question: what’s missing, would you use it for X].
[Optional offer: PH visitors get X free for 3 months with code HUNT.]
Why it works
Product Hunt concentrates people who like trying new products into a single daily list. Early adopters, journalists, newsletter writers and investors browse it. A good day puts your product in front of them all at once, and the page keeps working afterwards as a public record with comments and social proof you can link to.
How it gets users
It depends heavily on your preparation. Without a supporters list, most launches get a few dozen upvotes and a small number of signups. With 100+ engaged supporters and a clear product, a top-five day can bring a few hundred to a few thousand visitors and a meaningful batch of signups, mostly on launch day and the day after. Many visitors are other makers, so expect lower activation than from targeted channels. Newsletters and blogs that watch the leaderboard can bring a second smaller wave in the following week.
Common mistakes
- Creating the Product Hunt account on launch day and never commenting on anyone else’s launch.
- Asking people to “upvote” instead of to try it and leave feedback.
- Sending the link to everyone at 12:01 a.m. from a mass email, which looks like a vote ring.
- A vague tagline and a gallery of logos instead of product screenshots.
- Launching before the product works for strangers, so visitors hit bugs or an empty state.
- Disappearing after the first hour and leaving comments unanswered.
